This is a cattle-winning sāman. Whoever knows thus obtains cattle and becomes rich in cattle. The Śāktyas, desiring food, performed tapas. They saw this sāman. They praised with it. Thereupon they obtained food. Now, this [sāman] has [a nature] just like the Gaurīvita. For the Gaurīvita is food. And food is tomorrow's sustenance. Indeed, this whole [creation] was left over as food. This night is, as it were, surplus. In the night they place surplus food. It has a tone-ending (svāra). Breath is indeed tone. And food is breaths. So this sāman is the obtaining of prior food. Whoever knows thus obtains food, becomes an eater of food, and becomes the foremost among his own [people]. And because the Śāktyas saw it, it is called the Śāktya.
