"Indeed, we too with that purpose..."—[on this verse is] the Kāṇva. Kaṇva Nārṣada, wandering for a long time without a firm standing, desired: "May I find a firm standing!" He saw this sāman. He praised with it. He approached the finale with "rantāyai". Indeed, he who does not find a firm standing is, as it were, restless. The night is, as it were, wavering, or it is rest. Thereupon he found a firm standing. This is a sāman of firm standing. Whoever knows thus finds a firm standing. And because Kaṇva Nārṣada saw it, it is called the Kāṇva. "Pressed for exhilarating Indra"—[the verses] have [the word] "exhilarating" (madvat). Exhilaration is sap. The night is, as it were, sucked out, as it were, squeezed dry. They do not press [fresh soma]. What sediment they leave over from the third pressing, with that they proceed in this [night]. In that these [verses] have [the word] "exhilarating", they thereby place sap in it. With this, indeed, they swell it.
