One against whom sorcery is being practiced should make this very verse the opening verse.
He who practices sorcery, who assails, who desires evil—he indeed is the tormentor.
'Drive away from afar the tormentor' [cf. RV 9.61.1c]: by this he drives away downward, from afar indeed, the hateful, evil rival.
'With gleaming brilliance' [RV 9.61.2a]: one desiring spiritual luster should make this the opening verse.
The Gāyatrī indeed is gleaming.
The Gāyatrī is spiritual luster, the Triṣṭubh is force [and] vital power, the Jagatī is procreation.
Possessing spiritual luster, forceful, full of vital power, [and endowed] with offspring [and] cattle he is born, who knows thus.
'With resounding beauty, the pure Somas mixed with milk' [cf. RV 9.61.2bc]:
The pure Somas are indeed the sacrifice; those mixed with milk are cattle.
By this he secures both the sacrifice and cattle.
'Following his ancient splendor' [RV 9.61.9a]: he whose father or grandfather was superior, but considers himself rather degraded, should make this the opening verse.
Whatever fortune belonged to his father or grandfather, that very [fortune] he attains.
'The bold ones milked the clear [soma]' [cf. RV 9.61.10a]:
The clear is indeed the sacrifice; the bold ones are cattle.
By this he secures both the sacrifice and cattle.
'The milk-yielding, thousand-winning sage' [cf. RV 9.61.10c]:
He becomes full of milk; a thousand-winning hero is born to him.
