before the sun and the moon, of old, / through whom, discerning, [I reach] the intermediate directions and directions, / them I mount through heat of asceticism and through brahman.' / With this he mounts the breath-seasons. / 'The seasons who from the moon of old / became the verse, speech, and the brahman-priest'— / for they became such to one who knows thus— / 'through whom, discerning, [I reach] the intermediate directions and directions, / them I mount through heat of asceticism and through brahman.' / With this he mounts the divine seasons. / 'The one season, and the three seasons, / the seasons that are six, twenty-four, / twelve, seventeen, and also twenty, / them I mount through heat of asceticism and through brahman.' / With this he mounts these seasons. / Thus he is seized by those various seasons. / Just as he is seized by those seasons, even so, uninjured, he goes to the end of the year. / Each season serves the one who knows thus.
