Agni is the spade of this world, Āditya of yonder [world]. Then one desiring food should sacrifice with this: eight seventeen[-versed] Ukthyas in the middle. This very Agni digs out food for him from here, and Āditya bestows rain from yonder. These two dig out food for him from both sides. He indeed becomes an eater of food who knows thus. Now they also say: one desiring cattle should sacrifice with this. Its two Agniṣṭomas are on both sides, and the Ukthyas in the middle. The Agniṣṭoma is brahman, and cattle are the ukthas. By means of brahman he thus encloses cattle on both sides, so that they do not scatter away. The wealth of him who knows thus is not scattered. Now, he who has this rising six-day period, a rising three-day period, and a light-Atirātra: one desiring heaven should sacrifice with this. These stomas are rising; the heavenly world is rising, indeed for the attainment of the heavenly world. Now, he who has this light, cow, life, Atirātra, light, cow, life, Atirātra, light-Atirātra—he who desires, 'May I conquer luminous worlds,' should sacrifice with this. Four, indeed, are the manifestations as it were of light among the gods: Agni on earth, Āditya in the sky, Candramas among the constellations, and lightning in the waters. He who, knowing thus, sacrifices with this sacrificial rite, and who also knows it thus, and who also knows it thus, conquers these luminous worlds.
