He said: "When I told you, 'Stand firm on six firm foundations,' I told you only this: 'Do not displace those having finales (nidhanas) from the heads of the pavamāna [lauds]!' For this indeed is the firm foundation of a sāman, namely the finale. These ones having finales are six; six are the seasons, the year. Just as one would climb a tree stepping with foot-supports, even so do they go climbing to the heavenly world by means of these sāman-finales. Therefore those having finales are not to be displaced from the heads of the pavamāna [lauds]. And when I told you, 'Do not go away from the six possessing yellowish bays,' I told you only this: 'Take hold of the Bṛhatī verses with the iḷā-divisions (iḷābhiḥ)! Do not go away from the six possessing yellowish bays!' These are those [verses] having streams/bays. Just as having yoked female mules possessing speed/bays one would go where one wishes to go, even so by these iḷā-divisions do they reach the heavenly world. Therefore the Bṛhatī verses are indeed to be grasped with the iḷās.
