Its [introductory] syllable hiṃ is the Gāyatra, the prelude is the Rathantara, the main chant is the Vāmadevya, the response is the Bṛhat, and the finale is the Yajñāyajñīya. Each one of these indeed rules over the heavenly world. He who knows this reaches the heavenly world. Moreover, this is the Arkya, this is the Mahāvrata. Its head is the Gāyatra, the Bṛhat and Rathantara are the wings, the Vāmadevya is the body, and the Yajñāyajñīya is the tail. As much as one secures through [a rite] having the Arkya, having the Mahāvrata, so much does he secure who knows this. Moreover, this arrangement is conducive to life. The Gāyatra is life, the Rathantara is all-encompassing life, the Vāmadevya is full life, the Bṛhat is complete life, and the Yajñāyajñīya is surpassing life. Those who praise with this become possessed of long life. Moreover, these very five lights, kindled, shine in these worlds: fire on earth, wind in the intermediate space, the sun in the sky, the moon among the constellations, and lightning in the waters. Fire belongs to the Rathantara, wind to the Vāmadevya, the sun to the Bṛhat, the moon to the Gāyatra, and lightning to the Yajñāyajñīya, for the Yajñāyajñīya is water. These very five lights, kindled, shine in these worlds.
