Now, Ayapi Saumāpa used to say: 'He who knows thus—just as one would satisfy cattle without crowding at a large watering place on the sandbank, so indeed all the deities are satisfied without crowding at each soma pressing, syllable by syllable in the meters—he may sacrifice today, or he may officiate at sacrifice for another.' The Gāyatrī has eight syllables; there are eight Vasus; the morning pressing of the Vasus is in Gāyatrī [meter]. Thus they are satisfied without crowding at the morning pressing, syllable by syllable in the meters. The Triṣṭubh has eleven syllables; there are eleven Rudras; the midday pressing of the Rudras is in Triṣṭubh [meter]. Thus they are satisfied without crowding at the midday pressing, syllable by syllable in the meters. The Jagatī has twelve syllables; there are twelve Ādityas; the third pressing of the Ādityas is in Jagatī [meter]. Thus they are satisfied without crowding at the third pressing, syllable by syllable in the meters. He who thus knows these satisfactions of the gods is satisfied in himself, and his offspring is satisfied.
