Now they say: Indeed, the gods have evil dispelled; they do not sleep. But through the abundance of exhaustion, they closed their eyes. And while they were sleeping and negligent, the Asuras took their fiery energy, faculty, and vital power, and led [them] away down into the waters. Viṣṇu saw that. When the gods awoke, it was unpleasant to them. Viṣṇu said to them, "Let there be nothing unpleasant to you. I have kept track of it." He led them down to the waters. Inside the waters, they saw it all around, just as a hump might project from a back; so it was. Taking it with these very sacred utterances, they gave it to Viṣṇu. Viṣṇu, bearing this fiery energy, faculty, and vital power, shrunk together. Therefore Viṣṇu is short. And therefore they seize a short cow for Viṣṇu. Where, bearing [it], he strode out, that indeed became the Viṣṇupada. Therefore, the Kaikeya sacrifice that relates to Viṣṇupada is superior. For in this [sacrifice] they found it. He who knows this thus takes the fiery energy, faculty, and vital power of his hateful rival.
