As to this they say: “Since there are thirteen months, and the year is the fourteenth, by what then do they attain the thirteenth month and the year as fourteenth?”
He should say: “By the two Atirātras.”
By the introductory Atirātra they attain the thirteenth month; by the concluding [Atirātra], the year as fourteenth.
As to this they say: “He indeed may know the twelve-day rite today, he indeed may consider: ‘I know,’ who knows it established in all worlds.”
The months are indeed the days of the twelve-day rite; they are indeed the worlds; these are indeed the worlds of the gods.
The month Phālguna is indeed the first day of the twelve-day rite; Caitra the second;
Vaiśākha the third; the full moon of Āṣāḍha the fourth; Śroṇā-Śraviṣṭha the fifth;
Śatabhiṣaj the sixth; Proṣṭhapada the seventh; Āśvayuja the eighth; Kārtika
the ninth; Mārgaśīrṣa the tenth; Taiṣa the eleventh; Māgha the twelfth.
The introductory Atirātra is the thirteenth month; the concluding [Atirātra] is the year as the fourteenth.
This twelve-day rite is established in all the worlds.
He who knows this twelve-day rite thus established in all worlds is established in all worlds.
This twelve-day rite is indeed he who shines here; he is Indra; he is Prajāpati; he is indeed all this—thus one should meditate upon [it].
He is indeed all this—thus one should meditate upon [it].
