In the beginning, indeed, there were [only] two soma pressings. By two soma pressings, indeed, the gods conquered in the beginning. Having conquered, when they were sitting according to their worlds, Indra came and said, 'Three are the meters, three are breath, out-breath, and diffused breath, three are these worlds; three times [it is said] among the gods. Come, let us make these three soma pressings.' They said, 'We shall not be able; we are indeed weary from this previous work.' Indra said, 'Then I myself will fashion the third pressing from myself.' From his very own self he fashioned the third pressing. That third pressing of the deities, indeed, is Indra. Through Indra, [the praise] of the deities is praised for him who, knowing thus, praises with the third pressing. The third pressing is, as it were, sucked dry. Suparṇa, having brought the Jāgata [soma], sucked it. Therefore it is, as it were, squeezed out. With 'By the sweetest…', by that they make it sweet. With 'By the most intoxicating…', they place sap, intoxication itself, in it. They pour in the milk mixture, they proceed with the animal [sacrifice]; with this they make it swell. 'Slayer of monsters, looking upon all, to the birth-place made of iron'—this is the transition to the previous two soma pressings. On these [verses] the Gāyatra [sāman is sung]; its Brāhmaṇa has been explained.
