Those two Aśvins, being horsemen, outdid [the others] in horse-speed. As the two were running, Agni stepped in their way. The two said to him: 'Let us pass.' 'No,' he said, 'give me a share!' 'A third is yours,' the two said, 'but let it be called after the two of us.' 'Yes,' [he said]; so he let them pass. As the two were running, the Dawn stepped in their way. The two said to her: 'Let us pass.' 'No,' she said, 'give me a share!' 'A third is yours,' the two said, 'but let it be called after the two of us.' 'Yes,' [she said]; so she let them pass. The two won. He who thus knows this victory of the Aśvins, wherever he desires: 'May I win here,' he wins there. And he who knows this sharing by Agni and the Dawn, wherever he desires: 'May I receive a share here,' he receives a share there. Therefore, they chant together on [verses] addressed to various deities, but it is called simply 'the Āśvina'; for that was their choice.
