The gods and the Asuras were contending over day and night. The gods conquered the day. Then the Asuras entered into the verse (ṛc) and into the night. The gods said: 'We have gained only half of this world. How can we conquer the night completely, so that we may follow them up with treasures?' They said to Agni: 'With your meter!' To Indra: 'With your stoma!' To Prajāpati: 'With your numerical sum!' To the All-Gods: 'With your abode!' Because they said to Agni: 'With your meter,' therefore they chant on Gāyatrī verses. Because they said to Indra: 'With your stoma,' therefore the stoma of the night is fifteenfold. Because they said to Prajāpati: 'With your numerical sum,' therefore it amounts to the Anuṣṭubh. Because they said to the All-Gods: 'With your abode,' therefore Jaganī verses are recited. Pursuing them with the Saṃdhi [sāman], they caused them to go to destruction by means of the Āśvina. He causes his hateful rival to go to destruction, who knows this.
