Now these seven-day rites.
Seven, indeed, are the meters.
The meters, indeed, are all speech.
He who attains prosperity attains the sovereignty and lordship of speech.
[Thinking,] 'May I attain the sovereignty and lordship of speech,'
he therefore sacrifices with a seven-day rite.
Seven, indeed, are the breaths.
Cattle and offspring wait upon [a man], held fast by the breaths.
[Thinking,] 'By whichever breaths offspring and cattle are held fast and wait upon [one], by those breaths may offspring and cattle wait upon me held fast,'
[he sacrifices with it]. By the breaths, indeed, the gods went to the heavenly world.
[Thinking,] 'By whichever breaths the gods went to the heavenly world, by those breaths may I go to the heavenly world,' [he sacrifices with it].
Seven, indeed, are the breaths in the head.
These breaths in the head are free from evil.
[Thinking,] 'According to the measure of those breaths that are free from evil, let me extend the sacrifice,' [he sacrifices with it].
The Seven Ṛṣis, indeed, desirous of prosperity, performed ascetic toil.
They saw this seven-day sacrifice.
They brought it.
They sacrificed with it.
