Only those belonging to the Triṣṭubh and the Bṛhatī should be applied. For the midday [pressing] belongs to the Triṣṭubh and the Bṛhatī. Therefore, when there is a Rathantara day, they should apply one belonging to the Bṛhatī on it; on a Bṛhat day, one belonging to the Triṣṭubh. For them, the pragāthas belonging to the Triṣṭubh are not exhausted, nor are those belonging to the Bṛhatī. The meters are harnessed according to their proper place, and they sit through the year with fresh potency. But on that point they say: Just two should be applied, namely the two pragāthas of the Śyaita and Naudhasa [sāmans]. For these two are most full of vital power; these two are indeed the straight-going paths to the heavenly world for me, which are the Bṛhat and the Rathantara. These two are the straight-going paths of them, which are the Śyaita and Naudhasa. Day by day they thus go straight to the heavenly world. Regarding this, there is this verse: / 'When a man is driven away from the great road of all-encompassing life, / having run after that very course, exhausted, he wishes to drive toward it again.' / Thus: when the great road exists, they set out upon a bypath who apply other pragāthas. But those day by day go straight to the heavenly world who apply the two pragāthas of the Śyaita and Naudhasa. Therefore, just two should be applied, namely the two pragāthas of the Śyaita and Naudhasa.
