The introductory verse is dedicated to Vāyu for the appeasement of Agni Vaiśvānara, so that it may not burn up. Regarding this they say: 'Those who introduce [it] with verses dedicated to Pavamāna are deprived of their breaths.' Because this introductory verse is dedicated to Vāyu, and Vāyu is breath, they prosper with breaths. It contains 'śukra' in 'O Vāyu, the clear [śukra] has been offered to you,' for this day belongs to Śukra. In 'the foremost of the sweet drink at the offerings,' thereby they become sweet, foremost, and possessed of spiritual luster. In 'come to drink soma,' it is thereby made into a soma-verse belonging to Pavamāna. In 'O desirable god, accompanied by teams,' he indeed is desirable, and food is accompanied by teams; thus they approach him with food. He who approaches a superior bringing a gift, [the superior] rejoices at him; but he who approaches him bringing nothing, he does not rejoice at him. Because this introductory verse is dedicated to Vāyu in the Anuṣṭubh, [it is so that] he will rejoice at us and we may prosper with him. Concerning this, however, they say: the introductory verse should be 'Flow as the foremost of speech.' Speech indeed is spread out as these worlds; that which is yonder sun burns as its top. Because the introductory verse is 'Flow as the foremost of speech,' it is him that they approach through this. Just as one might grasp oneself with oneself, even so do they grasp him with his own form. Moreover, because this quarter 'pavasva' is turned underneath, by that this Vāyu, turned underneath, blows so that there will be no burning up.
