"Conquests" (jaya), indeed, by name are these stomas that are the pavamānas.
By means of the pavamānas the gods went forward, conquering the Asuras.
That these pavamānas proceed only forward is just like one going forward conquering.
When they follow them up with the anuṣṭubh—for speech is the anuṣṭubh, and speech is the impeller—by speech one says:
"Go forth, conquer, stride forward, do not retreat!"
Just as one would say by speech, "Go forth, conquer, stride forward, do not retreat!", such is that.
The gods are the pavamānas.
They are the stotras of the gods.
To them the gods are attached.
Creatures are the pṛṣṭhas and ukthas.
They are the stotras of creatures.
To them creatures are attached.
Because they chant with the pavamānas proceeding only forward, therefore the gods proceed forward.
The sun goes forward; the moon goes forward; the constellations go forward; fire goes forward burning.
Now, because they chant with the pṛṣṭhas and ukthas both going forward and turning back, therefore creatures both go forward and turn back.
Creatures set out forward in the morning; they return in the evening.
Semen is emitted forward; it is born turned back.
