Pṛthu Vainya asked the divine Vrātyas: "The highest abode of the sacrifice, hidden in secret, fashioned from the great intermediate space: why do the pavamānas go forward? Why do the ukthyas cry out turning back again?"
"The gods live upon one track of the sacrifice, humans upon another. Therefore the pavamānas go forward; therefore the ukthyas cry out turning back again," they replied.
He who knows the gods distributed among men and men distributed among the gods comes to have a share among the gods and a share among men.
He goes to that world where the gods are; the deities do not turn away from him.
The gods are the pavamānas; creatures are the pṛṣṭhas and ukthas.
The gods are the sāman; creatures are the meters.
Because the pavamāna sāmans only go forward, and then this verse wraps around [them], thereby the gods are distributed among men.
Then, because in the recurring [chants] the sāman wraps around the verse wrapping around, thereby men are distributed among the gods.
He who knows this thus comes to have a share among the gods and a share among men.
He goes to that world where the gods are; the deities do not turn away from him.

2.277.p4

Now, because with the pṛṣṭhas and ukthas they chant on [verses] of various forms and addressed to various deities, therefore creatures
