will answer back and question me." Then he came right up to him. He said: "He who makes a verse but not a sāman, he, though kindled, has not blazed up. But he who makes both a verse and a sāman, he, being kindled, has blazed up. This I answer to you; this did my father, this my grandfather, this my great-grandfather!" Thus indeed he traced it back from Priyamedha. So this sāman is fiery energy and spiritual luster. By this indeed he struck away the evil of his forefathers. He who knows this becomes possessed of fiery energy and spiritual luster, and strikes away the evil of his forefathers. And because Sākamaśva saw [it], therefore it is named the Sākamaśva. [The verses begin:] 'Which, O Soma, wonderful and praiseworthy...' Thus they contain the word 'wonderful' (citra); cattle are indeed of wonderful form. Cattle are this day; it is for the acquisition of cattle. Regarding this they say: 'These [priests] go away from the triṣṭubh, the end of the pavamāna, when they make the end on gāyatrī verses.' They contain the word 'bull' (vṛṣan). The word 'bull' is indeed the characteristic of the triṣṭubh; thereby they do not go away from the triṣṭubh, the end of the pavamāna.
