aprāpto yas tu śuklādiḥ saṃnidhānena gamyate
sa yatnaprāpito vākye śrutidharmavilakṣaṇaḥ //
Whereas a quality such as white, which has not [already] obtained, is understood through proximity; / having been obtained through effort in the sentence, it is distinct from the character of a direct statement.
