The sharīf Nāṣir al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Ḥusaynī al-Kārimī, known as al-Zumurrudī, who entered India twice and stayed with Sultan Quṭb al-Dīn in Delhi, told me that most (MS p. 36) of their dress is white, and most of their gatherings [are in] Tatar robes embroidered with gold. Some wear sleeves embroidered with zarkash, and some put the embroidered band between the shoulders like the Mongols and their followers, square in extent and set with jewels, their setting mostly of rubies and diamonds. They braid their hair in hanging tresses, as the army of Egypt and Syria used to do, and put silk tassels in the tresses. They tie belts of gold and silver around their waists, and [wear] boots and spurs. Swords are girded only on journeys, not when at home. As for the viziers
