a very favourable impression on him, and he gave him a great deal of money, part of it for himself and part of it to take with him for Abū Saʿīd by way of a gift. The total that reached him from [the Sultan], both what was for Abū Saʿīd and what was for himself, was eight hundred tumans [1] — the tuman being ten thousand current dinars, and the dinar six dirhams — so that this sum comes to eight million current dinars, equivalent to forty-eight million dirhams. When he returned with this abundant wealth, he feared it would be taken from him at the Ordu, so he divided it into portions and hid it from view. Now Amīr Aḥmad, son of Khwāja [2] (manuscript p. 26) Rashīd, brother of the vizier, had been involved in an affair that required his removal from the Ordu, but out of regard for the position of his brother the vizier Ghiyāth al-Dīn Muḥammad, he was given a written appointment as amīr of the īlkāh [3], which means that he governs wherever he halts in the realm, even over its governors. On his way he came upon this Sayyid ʿAḍud and took a great deal from him; it is likely that he made of it several loads of gold and silver vessels to present to Abū Saʿīd and the khātūns [4], and I reckon he intended it as his means of returning to the Ordu. But death overtook him swiftly; then Abū Saʿīd and Sayyid ʿAḍud died, those days came to an end, the gold was gone, and what they had gained availed no one [5].
