The palace of the sultan at Dihlī is called Dār Sarā, with a over the s and the r. It has many gates. At the first gate there is a body of men assigned to it, and there sit the players of trumpets, horns and pipes (ṣurnāy); when a great amīr comes they sound them and call out as they play: "So-and-so has come! So-and-so has come!" It is likewise at the second and third gates. Outside the first gate are platforms on which the executioners sit, they being those who kill people; for their custom is that whenever the sultan orders someone to be killed, he is killed at the gate of the audience hall, and remains there for three days. Between the first and second gates is a large vestibule with platforms built along both its sides, on which sit the men on duty from among the gatekeepers.
