Sultan Fakhr al-Dīn's love for the faqīrs went so far that he made one of them his deputy in the kingdom at Sudkāwān. He was called Shaydā — with a after the dotted sh and the undotted d, with the last letter of the alphabet, y, between them. [The sultan] went out to fight an enemy of his, and Shaydā rebelled against him, wishing to seize the kingship for himself, and killed a son of Sultan Fakhr al-Dīn, who had no other son! He learned of this and turned back to his capital, and Shaydā and those who followed him fled to

the city of Sunarkāwān, which is well fortified. The sultan sent troops to besiege it, and its people, fearing for their lives, seized Shaydā and sent him to the sultan's army. They wrote to [the sultan] about him, and he ordered them to send him his head, which they did; and a large number of faqīrs were put to death on his account.

When I entered Sudkāwān I did not see its sultan or meet him, because he was in revolt against the King of Hind and I feared the consequences of that. So I travelled from Sudkāwān making for the mountains of Kāmarū (with a over the k and the m and u after the r); between them and Sudkāwān is a month's journey.

The people of these mountains resemble the Turks and have great capacity for work; a slave from among them is worth several times what a slave of other peoples is worth. They are famous for practising magic and devoting themselves to it. My purpose in travelling to these mountains was to meet one of the saints living there, Shaykh Jalāl al-Dīn al-Tabrīzī.
