The sultan of Fākanūr is an infidel named Bāsadaw (with a after the one-dotted b, the undotted s and the undotted d, and a quiescent w). He has about thirty warships, whose commander is a Muslim named Lūlā; he was a villain who committed piracy at sea and robbed merchants. When we anchored at Fākanūr, its sultan sent his son to us, who stayed on the ship as a sort of hostage, and we went ashore to him. He entertained us for three days with the finest hospitality, out of respect for the Sultan of Hind, in fulfilment of what was due to him, and in hope of the profit he might gain from trade with the people of our ships.
