وكانت عادتي إذا بعثت عن خصم من الخصوم أبعث له قطعة كاغد مكتوبة أو غير مكتوبة، فعندما يقف عليها يبادر إلى مجلس الحكم الشرعي، وإلا عاقبته، فبعثت إليه على العادة، فأغضبه ذلك وحقدها لي، وأضمر عداوتي، ووكل من يتكلم عنه، وبلغني عنه كلام قبيح! وكانت عادة الناس من صغير وكبير أن يخدموا له كما يخدمون للوزير جمال الدين.

It was my custom, when I sent for one of the parties to a suit, to send him a piece of paper, written on or not; as soon as he saw it he would hasten to the sharīʿa court, or else I would punish him. So I sent to him in the usual way. This angered him, he bore me a grudge for it and secretly harboured enmity towards me; he appointed someone to speak on his behalf, and ugly words of his reached me! It was the custom of the people, young and old, to make obeisance to him as they made obeisance to the vizier Jamāl al-Dīn.
