When Qāḍī Jalāl fled, he joined Nāṣir al-Dīn, son of Malik Mall, at Dawlat Ābād and entered his following. The Sultan came against them in person. They had gathered some forty thousand Afghans, Turks, Hindus and slaves, and had sworn to one another not to flee but to fight the Sultan. The Sultan came to fight them without raising the parasol, which is his emblem; when the fighting grew fierce he raised the parasol, and when they saw it they were dismayed and were routed in the most shameful defeat. The son of Malik Mall and Qāḍī Jalāl took refuge with about four hundred of their close followers in the fortress of al-Duwayqīr, which we shall describe and which is one of the most impregnable fortresses in the world. The Sultan settled in the city of Dawlat Ābād, al-Duwayqīr being its fortress, and sent word to them to surrender to his judgement. They refused to surrender except under a guarantee of safety, and the Sultan refused to grant it. He sent them food out of contempt for them and stayed there, and that was how matters stood when I last had news of them.
