When Ṭāhir ibn Zayd, commander of the army of Khalaf ibn Aḥmad, and the rest of the commanders in Sijistān heard what had befallen Ṭāhir, their hearts entered into obedience to him [the Sultan], their inner thoughts were corrupted toward [Khalaf] in loyalty to him, and their resolve gave way for fear of sharing his [Ṭāhir's] fate. They held that city in obedience to the Sultan and in support of him, and sent to him declaring their resolve to hold fast to the rope of obedience and to observe the religion of the community, and asked that someone be dispatched to take over the region from them, so that they might hasten to his court and perfume themselves by kissing its dust. The Sultan did what they asked and rewarded them well for what they had done. The allegiance (khuṭba) was proclaimed there for the Sultan in the year 393.
