You have possessed, O my life’s blood, my very soul, / and kept awake, O my eye, my gaze.
If you are absent from my eyes for an hour, / by God, you are never absent from my mind.
And through you I learned the composition of speech, / so that the people named me “the poet.”
O absent one present in my heart, / peace be upon the absent one who is present!
