³ Ibid. pages 19, 20 compare also : "The Vāyu Purāṇa in its present shape seems to be referred to the fourth century A. D. by the well-known passage describing the extent of the Gupta dominions, which is applicable only to the reign of Chandragupta I in 320—326 A. D." The Purāṇas seem also to have been known to the author of the 'Questions of Milinda (Milindapanha)' who composed a part of the work where the first references occur, almost certainly earlier than 300 A. D. (S. B. E., volume XXXV, pages 6, 247).
