Chapter VII
v3.c27.s6.1
2. I. has a lacuna in place of पदं। The unusual form नामम् should be noticed; but this form is not uniformly used: see for instance lines 3, 4.
v3.c27.s6.2
3. पैशाच is read as पेकच (IX 422) also in the *Mayamata* (VII 1, 8, 23), which appears to be a better reading because पैशाच is the name of one of the several rounds into which a whole plan is father subdivided, the others being Daiva and Mānusha, etc.
v3.c27.s6.3
B. omits the lines 5, 6, and 7.
v3.c27.s6.4
7. I. reads, in place of this line, The complete line is taken from J. and other Mss.

14. The number intended to be expressed in this line is 144, the square of 12. I. J. सप्तआशदष्टं for सचत्वारिंशद्देवं। The twelfth plot is named देशीय (in the *Mayamata*, VII 3, 11), which is a synonym of देश्य।
v3.c27.s6.11
16 A. B. F. मेकं for मेवं।
v3.c27.s6.12

v3.c27.s6.13
19. J. विंशतिका, A. B. F. विंशतिवा for विंशपदा, J.'s reading is better as it avoids the repetition of पद।
v3.c27.s6.14
20. (1) B. नाम सिंहासनं। (2) I. J. षधिणेड़कास्तथा for यद्य षोदशकं तथा suggested by the other Mss.

v3.c27.s6.17

v3.c27.s6.20

Both I. and B. have the expression, तद्विशालकम्, for the first word of the next line.
v3.c27.s6.28
33. I. धिकम् for धिक्यं सप्तति suggested by J.
v3.c27.s6.29
34. B. विप्रगृह for विप्रगर्भे ।

v3.c27.s6.31
36. (1) B. विश्वश । The correct form seems to be विश्वेश ।
v3.c27.s6.32
(2) The form नामम् should be noted.
v3.c27.s6.33
37. I. ना for सं ।
v3.c27.s6.34

40. (1) J. B. युक्तं । (2) J. B. तोरिनम् for विप्रकान्तम् । 41. (1) I. षष्टविष्ट । (2) I. reads मासिक apparently for माधिक as in J. which is meant for सधिक ।
v3.c27.s6.37
42. (1) I. J. शोति for शत । (2) I. विंशाल ।
v3.c27.s6.38

v3.c27.s6.39
44. I. J. षष्टादश for षष्टशत; the emendation needs no explanation as the number required must be 800; see notes under 12 and 14 above.
v3.c27.s6.40
45. I. न··सं for तत्र त्रिं suggested by J.
v3.c27.s6.41
46. J. विधानकम् ।
v3.c27.s6.42
The improved reading, retained in the text, is suggested by B.
v3.c27.s6.43
48. (1) J. कान्त for कान्त । (2) J. त्रिंशच्च ।
v3.c27.s6.44
49. I. J. सङ्गमू for सहस्र suggested by the other Mss.
v3.c27.s6.45
50. The last plan is named इन्द्रकान्त in the *Mayamata* (VII 7, 21, 29), which does not seen to be a better reading. B. adds, between lines 50 and 51,
v3.c27.s6.46
51. (1) B. मेवपदं । (2) Notice the form सत्रम्, which is apparently meant for सूत्रेण ।
v3.c27.s6.47

53. (1) J. जलेशे, B. जलेशस्य, which is more grammatical. (2) I. पर····म, B. पाकरम्, J. पावहम् for क्षयाहर suggested by the other Mss.

v3.c27.s6.54
58. (1) B. वैशपदं, I. पद ।
v3.c27.s6.55
(3) The form स्थाप्य is untenable; it must be either साप्यं or ज्ञापयित्वा ।
v3.c27.s6.56
59. B. D. omit lines 59 and 60, and have instead the following:—
v3.c27.s6.57
v3.c27.s6.58
The reading of B. D. is very corrupt. But the above lines supply a clue to a very important passage left out by the other Mss. From the contents of lines 51 to 56, the general description of the thirty-two plans outlined by thirty-two technical names in lines 2 to 50 can be followed. But all the Mss., except B. D., have left out the description of the third plan called पीठ; they do not give a full description of the second plan, called पैशाच, either. This fact may induce one to recover the missing passage from B. D. and retain it in the text, but the passage in B. D. is hopelessly corrupt. In place of these line the *Mayamata* which is a summary of the *Mānasāra* reads the following—
v3.c27.s6.59
v3.c27.s6.60
60. (1) J. गृह। (2) J. पूजार्थः। (3) It is not clear whether the second half is intended to convey the sense of जनस्य स्वप्नार्थकं। See B. D.'s reading under note 59 above.
v3.c27.s6.61
62. (1) J. देश। (2) शादापवः does not seem to be the name of a god; the next word पार्यकं is certainly such a name. In the next two lines (63, 64) six such names are given; and in this line there must be two names to make the number eight. See note under Translation.
v3.c27.s6.62
63. A. F. विवद्वां।
v3.c27.s6.63
64. I. मुदनं, A. F. दरं for घरं। B. D. omit the next four lines, 65 to 68.
v3.c27.s6.64
65. J. सूत्रैः।
v3.c27.s6.65
66. J. वसुधा, A. F. वमशं।
v3.c27.s6.66
Between lines 68 and 69, there seem to be some line or lines missing, wherein should be described the location of ब्रह्मन् in the plan, उपपीठ, mention of which is made in line 70.
v3.c27.s6.67
67. I. J. सुप्रोक्तं for सुप्रोक्तौ suggested by A. F.

69. (1) I. पञ्चमम्यत्थत्। (2) A. F. शत्वा, I. ईंशात्तु for वैशात्तु (from the north-east).
v3.c27.s6.70
70. After the description of the 5th plan, called उपपीठ, we would naturally expect the descriptions of the 6th (उपपीठ), 7th (स्थण्डिल), 8th (चण्डित), 9th (परमशायिक) plans, etc. in order. But the descriptions of the 6th and 7th plans seem to be missing.
v3.c27.s6.71
71. (1) I. इवमें for सर्वे suggested by J. and the other Mss. (2) A. F. have got a lacuna for पदेषु ।
v3.c27.s6.72

74. It is not quite plain as to why these two plans were preferred by the ancient architects (see note under 154).
v3.c27.s6.74
75. (1) This line apparently should be read after line 154. See note under 154.

86. (1) I. भाजं च for राजं suggested by J. and supported by later reference.
v3.c27.s6.85

v3.c27.s6.88
89. A. F. न्यपुषा, J. पूर्वनिन्द्रे for पृषामिकोत्सके । 91. (1) I. रागं The required reading seems to be वायु and नाग । which are missing from this list of deities, but are included both under the ninth plan (lines 129, 149) and the general description (lines 10, 237); these emendations are supported by the *Mayamata* (VII. 36), and the *Śilparatna* (VI. 39). (2) A. F. ध्यार्थं, I. चार्यार्थं, J. चार्ये ।
v3.c27.s6.89

v3.c27.s6.105
109. (1) A. F. leave पाप in a lacuna; J. omits कोण प ।
v3.c27.s6.106
(2) The contents of the three lines, 107—109, have been condensed in the *Brihat-Saṁhitā*, LIII, 83 in one line: चरकी विदारो नामाथ पूतना राक्षसो चेति ।
v3.c27.s6.107
110. A. F. शाश्क ।
v3.c27.s6.108
111. As in the line 107 we should read here विधिः । 112. (1) I. तिस for रस । (2) I. मार्यका; it is read अर्यमा in the *Brihat-Samhitā*; but in lines 167, 255 of our text it is clearly आर्य (देव) । (3) J. देवस्समर्यक, A. F. भार्यकरस्थितिः ।
v3.c27.s6.109
The *Codex Archetypus* leaves out the next two lines, 113-114, which have been preserved by all other Mss; their presence between 112 and 115 is necessary.
v3.c27.s6.110
v3.c27.s6.111
114. मित्रस्यम् is another grammatically impossible form.

v3.c27.s6.115
(2) The form सर्वे must be connected with either पदे or कर्णे (most likely with the latter), both of which are in the loc. sing. सर्व is apparently taken as a noun and the form सर्वे is used for सर्वस्मिन् in the loc sing. This is really a very good illustration of the ungrammatical style of Sanskrit used in the *Vāstusāstra*.
v3.c27.s6.116
118. I. A. F. भूतर for भूधर ।
v3.c27.s6.117

120. (1) A. F. दनंने for पूर्वे । (2) I. J. सचिन्द्रकम्; the emendation, सवित्रकः, suggested by A. C. F., is necessitated by the fact that the deity सवित्र is described in the line immediately following.

121. A. F. पूर्वदेशोवोये रसार्मिंदु ।
v3.c27.s6.120

131. J. वेश, other Mss. for सत्यक ।
v3.c27.s6.127
The following four lines (132-135), left out by the *Codex Archetypus*, appear to be necessary between lines 131 and 136. These are supplied by *J.*
v3.c27.s6.128
132. J. जयन्तैव for जयन्तस्य।
v3.c27.s6.129
135. J. भृंशारचैक, I. भृंशस्यैक।

v3.c27.s6.133
(2) The form विधातस्य in this and the following line will further illustrate the barbarous Sanskrit.
v3.c27.s6.134
The *Codex Archetypus* leaves out the next three lines, 139-141, which have been preserved by all other Mss. and are necessary here.
v3.c27.s6.135
143. I. गर्म for गगन, suggested by J. A. C. F.
v3.c27.s6.136
144. (1) I. सुग्रीवं च। (2) J. adds तु before चोत्तरे।
v3.c27.s6.137
145. A. F. omit this line. I. leaves out the second half of this line, three following lines (146, 147, 148) and the first half of line 149, which it joins with line 145 as its second half.
v3.c27.s6.138

v3.c27.s6.145
154. I. यतोभि for मदितो।
v3.c27.s6.146
Line 75 (एतत्पदस्थितानां सर्वदेवानां रूपमुच्यते) should be read between lines 154 and 155. The points of great importance to note are:—(i) only the 8th and 9th plans are described in detail and (ii) the *Brihat-Saṁhitā*, the *Mayamata* and other treatises dealing with the subject have described only these two schemes. An attempt has been made elsewhere to explain the occurrence of these two schemes in detail, both in the *Mānasāra* and the *Bṛihat-Saṁhitā*. (See the writer's *Indian Architecture*, p. 162 and the note under Translation of lines 71–75).
