The story of Āryan civilization progresses from the moving Janas or clans of the Vedic age to the Janapada States in which the mobile communities entered upon a stage of "land-taking" or land-settlement in well defined areas called Janapada. The Janapada State synchronises with the literature which refers to it, viz. the Brāhmaṇas, Śrauta Sūtras, Pāli Tripiṭaka, Jaina Āgamas, and the Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, who gives a detailed picture of the cultural features of the Janapada units, as well as of their ruling aristocracies called Jānapadins.
