The palace had one or more, often several, storeys (*Bhūmika*, or *Tala*) and therefore described as *Ekabhūmika*, *Dvibhūmika*, *Tribhūmika*, upto *Navabhūmika*, i. e. one to nine storeys. A building of three storeys was more usual and the same became the norm for the pyramidal superstructure of the *Śikhara* in temples.
