The various illustrations in sculpture show that the palace apartment on the upper floor was in most cases set back from the parapet enclosed by a small *Vedikā* or railing so that between the room proper and the projecting *Vedikā* an exterior terrace, deck or balcony was available for open-air sitting, or as covered porch or verandah, sometimes provided with screens or movable curtains (*Saṃsaraṇa-kiṭika*, and *Udghāṭana-kiṭika*, Chulla 6. 3. 5).
