The conversion of Constantine to Christianity was an event of the greatest importance, not only for the empire, but for the whole world. It was the beginning of a new era, in which the Christian religion became the dominant power in the state. The emperor, who had been a pagan, became a zealous defender of the faith, and he did everything in his power to promote its growth. He built churches, endowed them with lands, and granted them many privileges. He also took an active part in the theological controversies of the time, and he did not hesitate to use his authority to enforce his own views.
