The death of Constantine was a great loss to the empire. He had been a strong and capable ruler, and he had done much to restore the unity and prosperity of the state. His successors, however, were not able to maintain the same level of authority, and the empire soon began to decline. The seeds of decay had been sown, and the time was not far off when the Roman empire would fall.
