¹ Early in the fourteenth century, the Buddhists of Burma, hearing that the sacred shrine at Budh Gaya in Bihar was in a state of ruin, undertook the restoration of this monument, and accordingly despatched to India a party of Burmese masons for this purpose. It is possible therefore that the remains of a form of the true arch afterwards exposed in the interior of the building were introduced into the structure at the time of this restoration These arches are of the same type as those described above, and such as are used in the Ananda structure.
