¹ In the year 1910 the author had the fortunate experience of seeing this vast structure under the most unique circumstances. It was the last appearance of Hallys comet then at its zenith, and the spectacle of this monumental pile with its "Many Buddhas" gradually emerging from the darkness lit by its great luminous beam mysteriously rising from behind the heavy smoke emitted at regular intervals from a distant volcano, is unforgettable.
