It seems to me that Caves I and II are nearer in style to the unfinished *viharas* at Ajanta than they are to Caves XVI and XVII. I incline to the view that the last excavations to be completed at Ajanta were *viharas* I and II and *chaitya* hall XXVI and that they may be attributed to the period between 600 and 642 A.D They are all splendidly decorated and must rank among the best examples of Buddhist architecture in India.
