Ajanta shows Buddhism at the zenith of its power. At Ellora, on the other hand, we see Buddhism being gradually overshadowed by a vigorous Hindu reaction. Ellora in fact represents a period when Buddhism began rapidly to decline in influence and authority ultimately to disappear almost completely from India. In the light of available information, the cases of this decline are difficult to explain with any degree of accuracy and this remarkable phase in religious history opens out a wide field for speculation.
