LIYA PATA or POTA.* This exceedingly conventional foliar ornament deserves particular study. It is more characteristic of Sinhalese design than any other form; instruction in the use of it is almost the first thing taught to young craftsmen. The elements of it will be best understood from Fig. 44, wherein the manner of drawing is also displayed; it is not easy to draw the form well unless the parts are taken in the right order.†
