*I have printed this Figure in red as a reminder that almost all drawings and diagrams of the Kandyan craftsmen are drawn in red, this colour being the most easily prepared of those in use amongst them. This appears to have been the case from the earliest times, to judge from Mahavamsa, Ch. XVIII. : “Using vermilion in a golden pencil and therewith making a streak.”*
