MALA. Many small or eight-petalled forms stand simply for *Mala* mal, flowers in general, without reference to special kinds (Pls. XVII.; XLIV., 7); but probably such forms are arrived at by a reduction of lotus rosettes. In extreme cases they appear only as small equal armed crosses (Pl. XXXII., 7, second border; XLV., 9, border).
