“The work takes its name from the author, who says at the end of the work that he heard *Sariputra* it, from whom he does not state, though the inference in such cases, is that he must have heard it from one of the ṛishis. From the style of the verses, though they are presented to us in an incorrect form, it is plain that the work is the production of a master hand. The author must not only have been well versed in Sanskrit, but (it is clear) that he was also a thoroughly efficient artist.
