PLATE II. DAUGHTERS OF KANDYAN CHIEFS. To illustrate the wearing of jewellery, chiefly ear-rings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets and rings. The bird pendant and chain worn by the second girl are the *kurulu beṇḍi mālaya*, the ‘garland with the bird,’ shown on a larger scale on Plate L., figure 8. The embroidered *heṭṭaya* and gold-woven *ohoriya* of the first girl should be noted; but the second wears a quite plain *heṭṭaya*, and an *ohoriya* of English material. For details regarding the dress of Kandyan women, and explanation of terms, see pp. 34, 35. Photos by SKEEN & Co.
