PLATE III. KANDYAN CHIEF. A Kandyan chief in full dress, as follows: *hatara-mulu-toppiya* (four-cornered hat), with *mal-gaha* (strictly a royal prerogative); *kamisiya* (shirt), under *pacca heṭṭaya* (‘green’ jacket) with gold buttons; *tuppoṭiya* (skirt or body cloth), with broad *paṭiya*; knife, finger-ring and handkerchief. Part of a *sēsata* is seen behind the chieftain. The brocade of the *heṭṭaya*, the *paṭiya*, and the *tuppoṭiya* are of Indian manufacture, the rest probably all local, except perhaps the material of the shirt. For an account of Kandyan dress, and explanation of terms, see pp. 32-34. Photo by SKEEN & Co.
