The reign of Diocletian, which began in the year 284, marks the commencement of a new era in the history of the Roman empire. The administration of the state was reformed, the military system was reorganized, and the authority of the emperor was established on a more solid foundation. The division of the empire into four parts, under the government of two Augusti and two Caesars, was a measure which was intended to secure the stability of the state, and to provide for the succession of the throne.
