the *Haskalah* (Enlightenment) movement, which had begun in Germany with Moses Mendelssohn, was now making its influence felt in the Russian Empire. The *Maskilim* (adherents of the *Haskalah*) advocated for the modernization of Jewish education, the adoption of the Russian language, and the integration of Jews into the broader society. They believed that by shedding their traditional insularity and embracing secular knowledge, Jews could improve their social and economic standing. However, this movement faced fierce opposition from the traditionalist rabbinical establishment, which feared that secular education would lead to assimilation and the abandonment of Jewish religious practices.
