This was the first time that the Lacedaemonians had invaded Attica since the beginning of the war. Their retreat was not due to any lack of courage, but to the fact that they were not prepared for a long siege, and they were anxious to return home before the winter set in. The Athenians, on the other hand, were relieved to see them go, but they knew that this was only the beginning of their troubles. They began to strengthen their fortifications and to make preparations for the next invasion, which they knew would come sooner or later.
