In the end, the war was brought to an end by the intervention of the Persians, who, seeing that both sides were weakened, decided to support the Lacedaemonians. With Persian help, the Lacedaemonians were finally able to defeat the Athenians and to bring the war to an end. The peace that followed was not a lasting one, and the seeds of future conflicts were already being sown.
